I played EA’s (Electronic Arts) games when I was young. I was really into it. And honestly, I thought it was one of the better companies. It pains me to see such an important company to have fallen so low with the need for microtransactions and other publishers have followed the same path. But let’s not get stuck what could be done better – everyone has read about the latest controversies. Everyone has their own ideas on what EA should have done. So do I and here they are.
In the recent video games related news, there are a lot of mentions of loot boxes or loot crates from games like Star Wars Battlefront II, Need for Speed Payback and Call of Duty WWII, but I will leave those games and their problems for another time. Those kind of micro transactions have existed in mobile games for quite some time, but for a bit different purpose. I want to use Kingdom Hearts Unchained / Union X as an example of how much impact these transactions have on a localized mobile game.
Pokémon cards have been as memorable as the anime or the video games. Nowadays, the whole trading cards business has boomed so much – it got tournaments, trading cards game and a massive fan base for both collecting and competitive playing. And I am a part of it, more or less in an old fashioned way.
This week was the Playstation Media Coverage from Paris Games Week. The live footage featured several games’ updates and announcements. Since there wasn’t much that I was personally interested in, I didn’t write about the coverage for Busy Potatoes. In case you have missed, here is the link. The most critical point was the ending of the coverage with a new trailer for The Last of Us: Part II. It stood out for sure … for the wrong reasons.
It is soon Halloween, so how fitting it is to write about a horror game! Recently me and @roosajokiaho got into a ”Walking Dead” game and TV show binge. The most interesting core storytelling of Walking Dead is that the zombies, or walkers, are not the centerpiece – it is actually the characters surrounded by those walkers. They have their agenda, motivations and ideals. It is hard to find the right path between the relationships. As a player, you have to make the choices who to sympathize with or give a cold shoulder to.
